Do your research. Don’t believe everything you read. Some of those marketing pieces may look too good to be true–but they usually are!
When you apply for a credit card, the credit card company will send you a confirmation letter. Read that letter carefully and make sure it reflects what you signed up for. That’s all you need to do. Otherwise, you’ll be surprised by a nasty surprise when you get your next billing statement. The credit card company will most likely cancel your account.
Never, ever, under any circumstances, apply for a loan or a mortgage with a business credit or merchant account. The business credit or merchant account is for those times when you need to purchase merchandise and you don’t have the cash on hand. So don’t use it for anything else! Credit cards and loans can help you improve your credit score and build a valuable business empire. But stay out of the trap by not applying to those special credit offers.
It is never a good idea to allow yourself to be pressured into making a purchase. If you feel pressured at some point, walk away. Don’t return for more or worse, and definitely don’t buy something that you cannot afford. You may end up bankrupt, or worse, hurt someone else.
Never, ever lie on your credit application. It’s always best to be truthful than to lie. You can be prosecuted for doing either. Lying can lead to a foreclosure, repossession or a criminal record.
You should always try to pay off your balances before you charge anything else to your credit account. Charge things you can pay off immediately. Don’t let yourself become another bill. Keep your balance paid off every month. If possible, pay more each month than you charge to your credit account.
Always keep your credit card number, including your security code, confidential. If someone else has access to it, they could steal it. Also, do not carry the card in your wallet. It’s easy to lose or forget it. If you need to make a payment, either mail it to the company or block it.
If you are working with a company that does card processing, have your employer’s permission to debit your bank account. This will prevent overdrafts and other fraud. It will also keep you safe from identity theft. Never give out your personal information or PIN to someone you don’t know.
Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Always have smaller bills. Carry a bag or purse for important papers. Don’t carry large amounts of cash, checkbooks, traveler’s checks or credit cards. And avoid carrying large amounts of magazines or newspapers.
Use credit cards, but use them wisely. Use them only for emergencies and for purchasing items that you truly need. Avoid impulse buying and always pay in full. If you’ve fallen on hard times and are unable to work, apply for a government grant, which is available for low income families and individuals.

Try to find cheap tours of the city. Avoid using public transportation when traveling out of town. And never buy a hotel room for the night if you’re not going to be home the following day. If you must do so, book your room at the hotels that charge less per night.
Work from home if possible. There are many companies that offer this type of opportunity to their employees. Try to find one that has an office in your local area. This will enable you to maximize your efforts.
